渡辺おさむが、群馬県初の展覧会を阿久津画廊（前橋市）で開催する。何とも重厚な展覧会タイトル「ウルトラスイーツバロック」は、今回の展覧会にむけた渡辺おさむの新たな野心の表れでもある。
「ウルトラバロック」とは、メキシコやペルーなど中南米諸国において、宗主国スペインから受け継がれたバロック建築様式が、現地の美意識と混交することで驚くべき独自の変化を遂げた様式のこと。隙間という隙間を全て埋め尽くす過剰な装飾と鮮やかな色彩は、やや“やりすぎ”感が否めないが、それらのキッチュな建築群は、かえって見るものに新鮮な驚きを与えてくれる。
渡辺おさむは、このウルトラバロックに見られる過剰な装飾様式や独自の美学に自身の作品との共通性を見いだし、「ウルトラスイーツバロック」という造語を生み出した。あらゆるものをスイーツで覆い尽くす自身の芸術を新しい装飾美術として世に提唱しようというのだ。
展覧会では、過去の代表作に加え、「ウルトラスイーツバロック」を意識した新作も発表予定。ますます進化する渡辺おさむ芸術から目が離せない。


Osamu Watanabe will open his first exhibition at Akutsu Gallery in Maebashi City, Gunma. It goes without saying that this exhibition’s dense title - ‘Ultra Sweets Baroque’ is the expression of Osamu Watanbe’s new ambi¬tion for this exhibition.
In Central South American countries such as Mexico and Peru, the Baroque architec¬tural style has been inherited and continued on from their his¬torical overlord – Spain. This style blended with a local aesthetic has produced a surprising and unique change in style – this is ‘Ultra Baroque’. It’s undeniable that this style where every single nook is filled with over the top ornamen¬tation and brightly coloured is ‘overdone’, but on the other hand these kitsch architectural oddities provide a fresh surprise each time you look at them.
Osamu Watanabe discovered a shared theme in his own artworks and the overdone decorative style and unique aesthetics of the ultra baroque style, and so the phrase ‘ultra sweets baroque’ was born. He proposes that his own art, where sweets blanket various objects, is one such new decora¬tive art form.
In addition to some of his previous notable works, there are also some new ones made with the ideal of ‘ultra sweets baroque’ in mind presented at this exhibi¬tion. Don’t take your eyes off this constantly evolving artist, Osamu Watanabe
